Samsung Gear S2 Classic 2017 Review

In 2016 Samsung released the Gear S2 Classic, and it hit carriers with a bang.  It appears to have sold very well, and lots of people liked it.  However, I’m not sold on smartwatches fully just yet, and I have many of them.

I don’t believe the price of a smartwatch should be more than a smartphone, I mean come..it’s a sidekick for crying out loud.  Why would anyone WANT to pay such high prices for it.  Well, the short answer is it’s their choice.  Many people might like the idea of a smart helper on their wrist, but I find myself still pulling out my smartphone.  The Samsung Gear line wants to help with that even more, so I don’t have to take out my smartphone.

The Samsung Gear S2 Classic was released in April of 2016, and we are now in March of 2017.  I was able to pick up the watch for pennies on the dollar, at only $96 from T-Mobile. Now that my friends is a steal, I mean look at these specs.

  • Stainless steel body
  • IP68 Waterproof
  • 4GB ROM, 512 RAM
  • 300mAh Battery
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth
  • 4G on Carriers
  • Makes and receives phone calls
  • Samsung Pay
  • Tizen OS

I could go on and on, but the point is..it’s loaded up.  It runs Samsung’s own, Tizen OS, which is very fast and fluid.  The highlight of this watch is clearly the design, and how you navigate.   It has a rotating bezel, and also a touch screen as well.  I find myself using the rotating bezel more than I thought I would, because fast and easy to remember it’s there.

You can get all of your notifications right on your wrist, quick and easy. If you decide you do not need to reply, simply ignore them. In some cases, you can reply right from the watch. I found myself doing this a lot. This is something to me, that can take some getting used to. When multimedia notifications come in, a nice clear picture comes in with it. All in all, this is what it’s for right? To see if you need to reply, or take out your phone.

The watch feels really good on your wrist, and even looks like a regular wrist watch.  I found that making calls on the watch was easy, but the quality of the speaker is not very good.  In fact, I would tell you not to even try it.  It’s so weak, I can barely hear my callers.  While the caller on the other hand hear me just find, and didn’t even know I was using a smartwatch.  The calling feature is a bonus for sure, and well received at that.

The quality of the hardware is great, watch band, and screen are all great.  I don’t know for sure if the band is real leather..but it can be replaced.  Which is a good thing.  The watch does really good on battery, and last me at least a day and half on a single charge.  I found myself wearing this watch more than others, because it’s so comfortable.

The watch can work with pretty much any smartphone, even non Samsung devices.  It’s easy to pair up, and works with ease.  While you won’t get the full functionality as you would with a Samsung device, you will get some.  Overall, the watch is still a good buy in 2017, and I didn’t feel the need to run out and buy the Gear S3 Frontier over this one.
